Few Summer’s back I visited Shimla , hoping to break my monotonous schedule in 40 degree heat of Gurgaon and endless waits on the Expressway toll plaza . I choose Shimla because to my knowledge it was the nearest Hill Station from Delhi Ncr . On reaching Shimla I was relieved by the sub 30 degrees temperature , but to my horror Shimla was even more crowded than Delhi streets , just like a fish market without its smell. Since that trip I decided to research my holiday location very wisely and by thorough investigation. Since my that Shimla visit I have visited a number of Hill Stations near Delhi and I enjoyed each and every hill station . All the following Hill stations have either been visited by me or were suggested by my friends , I hope this short list helps you in choosing a great vacation.
I start my list with the “Nearest Hill Station from Delhi“ i.e Dehradun , tough it cannot be categorized as unexplored still it is a quite
Hill stations near Delhi within 300 kms . beautiful , peaceful and way less crowded eve during May to July Holidays. One more reason for suggesting Dehradun is that since being the nearest hill station it is the cheapest to travel with abundant options to reach there via road and rail. You can reach Dehradun in 4-5 hours after crossing Delhi via road . Taxi’s charge around 5-7 K, while buses charge around 300-1000 Rupees. Several trains ply between Dehradun and Delhi with options ranging from Rajdhani to Normal expresses.

Average time 5 – 6 hours and good for a cheap and quick holiday.
This could be the Second nearest Hill station from Delhi. Nahan is in Himachal Pradesh at height of 1000 m , so it is quite a cold place.
By road it would take around 5-6 hours to reach Nahan from Delhi . Since it is not that much frequented Taxi charges exorbitant rates .
Therefore I suggest taking a train to Ambala , which is easily to find , and from their taking a Cab for a mere 1000 rupees or a bus to Nahan. Distance between Nahan and Ambala is 64 Kms and journey takes around an hour .
Nainital is around 270 kms from Delhi. I suggest this destination for tourist who would like to travel by air and avoid travelling by either train or road . Pantnagar Airport is near to Nainital and it takes around 1500 Rs to travel between the two. So Nainital could be termed as Nearest Hill Station from Delhi via Air. Apart from that you can reach Nainital by road in 5-6 hours and Cab charges are around 5-7000 while deluxe bus costs around 1000 Rs. To reach Nainital by train you have to reach Kathodgam via train from Delhi and then get a bus or cab to Nainital. Kathodgam is 3-4 hours away from Delhi via train.
Parwanoo is another less frequented Hill station near Delhi where you can reach via train , road and air.It is about 270 Kms from Delhi. A cab can take you there in 6 hours and charge 6-8k Rupees. A delux bus will take 800 bucks. It is just 20 kms from Chandigarh and hence can be visited by both train and air .
I have already described about Lansdowne over here.
Mussoorie is around 280 kms from Delhi, Cab charges around 6-8k bucks and it takes around 6-7 hours to reach there. To reach Mussoorie via train you will have use Dehradun or Haridwar as a Stopover since there is no station in Mussoorie.
Hill stations near Delhi within 400 kms
Good for a medium budget , more cooler than previous hill Stations.
Kasauli is around 300 kms from Delhi ncr and my favorite among Hill Stations near Delhi. A journey by road takes around seven hours and will cost you 8-10 k rupees on a private taxi . There are no direct buses to Kasauli. If you are planning to visit Shimla I suggest you rather visit Kasauli as it is just 80 Kms from it. Secret: – Favorite destination of “drug tourism” among both foreigners and Indians .
2. Ranikhet And Almora
Ranikhet lies in the Almora district of Uttrakhand. I suggest visiting Both of them together and spend at least 3-4 days over there and get mesmerized by its vivid flora and fauna. You can reach Almora via road in 7-9 hours and it will cost you 7-10 thousand bucks , from there you can move on to Ranikhet. Kathodgam again is the nearest railway station to reach hill stations. For me this is a complete package and best among the hill stations near Delhi.
Chail is around 40 kilometers from Shimla and around 350 kms from Delhi /Gurgaon, either book a cab after reaching Shimla or directly from gurgaon or Delhi. It takes around 7-8 hours from Delhi to Chail and a private cab will cost around 7-10k rupees.
I have already written about Kausani.
Hill Stations near Delhi (greater than 400Kms)
for a long holiday and a substantial budget.
Tough it is not a unexplored Hill Station near Delhi, still owing to its distance and difficulty to reach Dharamshala still fits into my peaceful category or maybe Divine . I don’t need to describe this place as almost every one knows about it. Unless you can hire a plane ,it takes about 18 hours to reach there and a 9-13 thousand rupees. I would say it is still worth it.
2. Palampur /Kullu/Manali
I suggest visiting these 3 locations together, and since manali is getting more and more popular among tourists during summer . I suggest staying in a high-end resort or Old Manali , Old manali is still very peaceful and worth enjoying. Palampur can also be visited during a visit to Kullu and Manali. There are direct buses to Manali costing around 800-1000 rupees while a private cab will cost around 9-12 K rupees. A total 10-16 hours time will be consumed on road. Sadly there are no trains available directly or even nearby to these Hill stations near Delhi.
Dalhousie is around 600 Kilometers from Delhi via road and around 18 hours owing to the high altitude roads . A private taxi charges around 11-16 thousand rupees. If you prefer to travel by train or road , Pathankot is the nearest railway and airport. It takes around two hours to reach from Pathankot to Dalhousie. You can also use Amritsar as an intermediate airport since flights to Amritsar are quite cheaper.
4. Mount Abu
Last but not the least, the only non-Himalayan hill station near Delhi. It is about 800 kilometers from Delhi. It takes around 12-14 hours to reach Mount Abu on road from Delhi and 12 hours in a train.A private taxi costs around 12-14K whereas a bus charges 2000 rupees. I must say it is very different from all the other Hill stations near Delhi as it is quite scenic despite the missing greenery.
I hope my list will help you find a very good holiday spot among all the Hill stations near Delhi.
